Chapter 11

‡

Kyle looked at himself in the full-length mirror and sighed. He hadn’t given this much thought to his appearance when he had been getting dressed for the Oscars. Of course—he thought with a small smile—that was just being on television in front of millions of people to accept the accolades of critics and peers. What was that in comparison to a “first date” with Aurora?

Nothing.

She was spectacular in so many ways. She was the first woman he’d ever met—no, the first person he’d ever met—who made him feel grounded and real. With everyone else in the world, he felt like he was playing some sort of role. Great boss, great friend, great cast member—even the role of “Kyle Austen Reed” when he met fans. But, with Aurora, there was none of that.

He was just Kyle.

Just himself.

He didn’t know what it was about her that engendered this realness. It might’ve been that she’d had to face so many difficult challenges in her life, and she’d faced them with such iron strength. She’d been through the fire, and rather than burn her to ashes, it had forged her like steel. The fact that she was so firm in her own strong character and had so little time or energy to waste on frivolities or façades inspired him to be the same.

Since he could remember, he had always shaped himself to meet the expectations of someone in a position to either give him something or withhold it. Some of his earliest memories were of Saturdays spent with his dad, accompanying him on his sales route, and listening to his father’s ongoing patter about what it took to be a successful salesman.

His dad communicated not by engaging in deep and meaningful discussion, but by dropping short pearls of wisdom that struck him as succinct but no less profound.

Damn, Kyle reflected. The old man would’ve loved Twitter. Too bad he never lived to see it.

He could still hear his father’s voice in his head before every meeting, during every scene, and every public appearance.

“You can only sell something if you’ve sold yourself on it first.”

“Know what your client needs and become that.”

“Don’t look for people who need what you’re selling. Look for people who need something and turn what you’re selling into what they need.”

“It’s not what you say, it’s what the prospect believes. You’re only as good as what you can convince them of.”

“The customer’s not buying the product. They’re buying how the product makes them feel. They’re buying the dream of what their life will be like after they have the product. Sell the dream, not the product.”

Those lessons were ingrained into Kyle’s mind since before he could remember. No value had been placed on authenticity, honesty, or integrity. His dad had not been a bad man, not by any stretch of the imagination. But he had been a consummate salesman. He’d judged his own worth by measuring how far he could manipulate the emotions and decisions of others, and he’d taught his son to value the same things.
